Just Like Dave

We’ve been told that profiling is wrong.  We’ve also been warned against stereotyping and told that every individual deserves to be judged separately and not penalized for the action of others.

But, what about Karen?  I know a lot of women named Karen.  Most of them are really great people.  Hardly any of them are middle-aged, “white privileged”, mini-van-driving, racist soccer moms.

We’ve been told over and over not to profile people.   Yet the name “Karen” has become an insulting term and a shorthand for describing racist white chicks.  The folks that appropriated the name “Karen” for their own purpose apparently skipped the profiling-is-bad page in the Wokeness Handbook.

If you’ve read any of my stuff, you should know by now that I like to apply logic and reason fairly.  If something is OK for one group to do, it’s OK for someone else to do as well.  It’s a goose-gander thing.

So, if someone can malign everyone named Karen just to create a shorthand for profiling a group of people, then I should be able to do something similar.

Except I’m going to go one better.  Because I’m abundantly woke, I’m not going to limit the use of the name by gender or race.  I want my shorthand term to be an equal-opportunity insult.

I propose that we use the name “Dave” to refer to any Liberal whose fanatical belief in something they don’t understand is eclipsed only by their ignorance of that very same something.

Let me tell you why.

I once bought a house from a guy named Dave.  Dave was a state trooper who was close to having his 20 years in and was looking for a new career.  The career Dave chose was to be a General Contractor.  There was only one problem.  Dave didn’t know much about building houses.

Dave was a nice enough guy, he just didn’t know anything about construction.  So, he relied on his contractors to tell him what’s what.  After all, they were the experts so Dave figured he should just believe everything they had to say.  And that’s what he did.

We moved around a lot and that was the sixth new home I had purchased.  I had gotten pretty good at knowing good construction from bad.  The house Dave was selling was built well but had a few minor issues that could easily be fixed.  One example was that I noticed the baseboards were there, but the wood flooring hadn’t yet been installed.

I tried to explain to Dave that the flooring had to be installed first so there was room for expansion and so the baseboards could cover up the ends that would never quite match.

Dave didn’t understand.  After all, his contractors had installed the baseboards and they certainly wouldn’t have done so if it were the wrong thing to do.  After going round and round for several minutes, I came to the realization that Dave was too ignorant to argue with.  It was impossible to reason with Dave because he simply didn’t know enough about the issues and how to correct them.

He couldn’t be convinced that he was wrong because he had an unwavering belief his experts were right.  He didn’t know why they were right, just that they were right.

Ultimately, I had to threaten to cancel the deal unless he fixed the problem.  Reluctantly, Dave pushed back on his contractors, they admitted they had done the work incorrectly, and the issues were corrected.  It turned out to be a great house and we lived there for ten years.

These days, when I think back on my experience with Dave, I’m struck by how similar my conversations with Dave are to talking with a typical Liberal.

Like Dave, Liberals unquestionably believe their experts.  And, like Dave, they don’t know why they believe them, they just know that they do.  It’s impossible to reason with a Liberal, just like it was impossible to reason with Dave, because Liberals simply don’t know enough about the issues at hand, and how to go about correcting them.  Liberals only understand the language of “cancel” and are too damned ignorant to argue with.

Just like Dave.

So, whenever I see a mask-wearing, border-opening, BLM-supporting, gun-stealing, police-defunding, riot-approving, fact-ignoring Liberal, regardless of color or gender, I think “Dave”.  And now you will too.
