Prison of Beliefs

I like to understand how people think.  Not necessarily what they think but rather, how they come to their conclusions.  Lately, I’ve been working to understand how Liberals think the way they do.

A few days ago, I wrote an essay entitled “Willful Ignorance” which described the feedback loop of willful ignorance and self-deception that I believe sums up how Liberals come to believe the things they believe, and then keep on believing it.  In August, I wrote an essay entitled “Cult of Democrats” where I show the similarities between the Democratic party and your run-of-the-mill religious cult.

This morning, I came across a term that ties both essays together quite nicely.  That term is “Prison of Belief”.  The term, is used in a 2015 documentary film called “Going Clear” to describe how The Church of Scientology keeps their members/believers in check.

Scientologists are kept in a “Prison of Belief”.  That is, they are restrained by their desire to continue to believe what they already do.  Their belief is so powerful that they ignore anything that might question what they believe in, which keeps them more tightly locked in their own prison.

Scientologists believe that the writings of L. Ron Hubbard are absolute.  Followers of Scientology aren’t even allowed to hear anything that might call into question what Scientology teaches.  They refuse to consider anything that casts doubt on what they’ve been told to believe.  By remaining ignorant, they’re making it harder to escape from the prison formed by their own beliefs.

As described in the documentary, in the Prison of Belief, the cell door is always open.  All one has to do to be released from the prison is to question what they’ve been told to believe.

Liberals believe that Trump is evil.  They believe everything that the Democrats and the mainstream media tells them about how Trump is a racist and must be defeated.  They believe that if Trump remains in office, America is doomed.  Liberals so firmly hold these beliefs that they willfully ignore facts that will prove their hatred of Trump is unwarranted.  By embracing their ignorance, they reinforce their self-deception which results in a continuous loop of willful ignorance and self-deception.  This feedback loop is the prison cell in which they find themselves stuck.

The good news is that the loop doesn’t have to be endless and it’s possible for someone to find a way out.   To escape from a jail of their own making, all a Liberal has to do is start thinking for themself.

Liberals, like Scientologists, are compelled to reinforce what they already accept to be true, which keeps them locked in a prison formed by their own beliefs.  And, unfortunately for them, there is no stronger jailor than one’s own mind.
