Poor Choices

One of the last things I had to do before I could get my carry permit was to have an interview with a Sheriff’s deputy.  He asked me if I would be willing to pull the trigger if I had to.  My reply was that it wasn’t my decision to make.    I would merely be reacting to a situation I found myself in. If someone chooses to threaten my life, then they chose poorly.

When someone decides to threaten me to a point where I fear for my life, then they’ve also made the decision that I should shoot them.  If they don’t want to get hurt, then the correct decision for them to make would be not to threaten me at all.

I feel the same way about people killed by the police.  When I hear about someone being killed by the police, my conclusion is that the deceased had a choice to make, and they chose poorly.  The police are merely reacting to a situation they found themselves in.

The issue of people being killed at the hands of police isn’t about race.  It’s about stupid people making bad choices.

Pop Quiz:  How do you feel about Steven Glass, Judson Albahm or Joseph Casten?

Who are they?  I’m not surprised you haven’t heard of them.  Nobody has.  They’re three dudes who were brandishing toy weapons in the past year.  They were all white.  And they’re all dead.

Ever hear of George Floyd, Daunte Wright or Rayshard Brooks.  Of course you have.  Everyone has.  Floyd was whacked out on drugs resisting arrest, Brooks was a drunk fighting with officers and resisting arrest, and Wright was resisting arrest and attempting to flee.  They were all black.  And they’re all dead.

Let’s put aside the obvious racial bias here.  We’ll get back to that later.  But first, I want to make sure we’ve covered a very important point.

Other than them all being dead, what is the one thing they have in common?  That’s right.  They chose to mess with the police.  And they chose poorly.

Every single one of those men could have made different choices any time before they were killed.  They could have chosen not to wave around toy weapons, not take drugs, or not resist arrest.  Quite likely a different choice would have resulted in a different outcome.  And all six men would still be alive.  They’d all be in jail, but they’d all still be alive.

Instead, they each made really bad decisions that ultimately resulted in their deaths and they are solely to blame for their own demise.  Without those really bad decisions, the officers wouldn’t have found themselves in situations not of their own making.

Now, let’s jump back to the race thing that doesn’t exist.

When we see a poor, uneducated, drug-using, underachieving white guy killed by police, we’re supposed to think, “Meh, he probably had it coming”.  So, no big deal.  Carry on.  Nothing to see here.

But, when we see a poor, uneducated, drug-using, underachieving black guy killed by police, we’re supposed to think “victim”.  So, very big deal.  Riot.  Loot.  Mayhem and destruction.

Here’s the thing.  Regardless of what you’re being led to believe by BLM, politicians or Big Media, it doesn’t matter what color they were.  Because none of them are victims.

No, they were all idiots.  Each of these idiots had the opportunity to make better decisions that would have produced a different result.  A result where they were alive in a concrete box instead of dead and inside a pine one.

They could have made better decisions.  But they didn’t.  They alone chose to take a bad situation and make it even worse.

And they chose poorly.
