An Imperfect Storm

In August of 1992 we were living near Ft. Lauderdale.  On the night of the 24th, hurricane Andrew struck and laid waste to south Florida.  It scoured a large portion of the area right down to the blacktop and the city of Homestead was nearly completely gone.  Supplies were limited and people started running out of food and water.  Various government agencies, including the Federal government, were playing political games which were stalling assistance to the area.  The people we had elected and given the responsibility to protect us in our time of need had failed us.  And people were dying.

Kate Hale, the Emergency Director for Miami-Dade County was fighting, mostly on her own, to find supplies and get them to the people who needed them.  But, for some reason, nearly a week after repeated requests for help, external agencies remained silent.  In one news conference, she asked the question that made her locally famous, “Where the hell is the cavalry on this one?”  Shortly after that, help started to flow into the county.

It’s time to ask the same question.

On the night of November 3rd, a storm, the likes of which we had never seen, struck our nation.  The Democrats, likely with assistance from a foreign power, laid waste to our election process.  They destroyed our right to free and fair elections.

In the weeks that followed, we’ve watched as President Trump has fought, mostly on his own, to right this terrible wrong.  He has tried multiple strategies only to have roadblocks thrown in his way each time.  His numerous requests for help have gone unanswered.  The courts are stalling and trying to run out the clock.  Even worse, political games are being played and people he considered to be his allies have been actively working against him to thwart his efforts.

There are supposed to be a series of checks and balances to make sure that no one arm of the government can go rogue. The checks and balances are supposed to protect us from a tyrannical government.  The three branches of the government (Executive, Legislative and Judicial) are supposed to work together toward the common goal of protecting the Constitution.

So far only the Executive branch (President Trump) is showing a commitment to protecting the Constitution.  The Legislative branch (House and Senate) is actively working against the Constitution and the Judicial branch (Supreme Court) has chosen to remain silent.

But there’s an unofficial fourth branch of the government.  It’s our right to a free press.  The media is supposed to act as an impartial observer to make sure that everything is above the board.  The media is supposed to investigate and report the news, not make the news.  Instead of working to uncover the truth, they are trying to convince people that the election was fair, and that everything is on the up-and-up.  Instead of reporting the truth, they simply ignore it.

The people we had elected and given the responsibility to protect this nation have failed us.  The media, who we trust to keep everyone honest, has decided to be part of the problem and not part of the solution.  The President is fighting for the rights of us all, but he is only one man.

Every United States Senator, Congressman and Justice of the Supreme Court takes an oath stating, in part, that they will “…defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic…”.   It’s what pay them to do.  Every U.S. Senator, Congressman and Justice has a solemn duty to protect the Constitution to the best of their ability.  They have an obligation to ride where others dare not tread.  So why aren’t they?

It’s time to demand that our elected officials do what we pay them to do, protect the Constitution of the United States of America. It’s time we ask each and every one of them, where the hell is the cavalry?
