A Star-Spangled Triangle

When George Floyd was killed by a racist white guy, America burned.  Yet there was no outrage at all when thirteen U.S. soldiers were killed by a different racist white guy.

Let me see if I’ve got this straight.  George Floyd, a drug addict who got himself killed after putting himself in harm’s way as he resisted arrest is hailed as a hero.  Thirteen soldiers who willingly put themselves in harm’s way to protect our country are not.  Even though they actually are heroes.

In what kind of world does this make sense?

When a memorial service was held for George, thousands of people attended, and the event was livestreamed.  When the caskets of 13 American soldiers were welcomed home this week, Joe Biden spent more time looking at his watch than he did paying his respects.  I guess he had someplace more important to be.

Here’s what I want to know.  When are NFL players going to tape the names of one of the fallen soldiers to their helmets?  They did this for Jacob Blake.  Jacob Blake, in case you don’t remember, was shot by police while reaching for a weapon.  After he resisted arrest.  After the police had come to his girlfriend’s house on a domestic disturbance call.  After he violated a restraining order.  After he raped his girlfriend.

I guess the NFL believes it’s a better call to pay tribute to someone who was injured by the police than to pay tribute to soldiers who were killed by the Taliban.

The “Say Her Name” movement was started after Breonna Taylor was killed while police were serving a warrant for her drug-dealer boyfriend.  For dealing drugs.  From her apartment.  Her boyfriend started shooting, the police shot back, and she was killed in the crossfire.

The movement was embraced by the WNBA.  Players wore warm-ups emblazoned with “SAY HER NAME” and the name “Breonna Taylor” was on everyone’s uniforms.  Her name was being used as a tool to protest “social injustice”.

Some claim that Breonna’s death was a tragedy that never should have happened.  By keeping her name in everyone’s memory, the hope is that those responsible will be brought to justice and her death won’t have been in vain.

Even Nancy Pelosi agrees.  She ended an interview in September of 2020 by saying, “Breonna Taylor, Breonna Taylor, Breonna Taylor.  Say her name”.

On Tuesday, the United States House of Representatives had a brief moment of silence for the thirteen soldiers killed last week in Afghanistan.  Afterwards, Nancy Pelosi refused to let the names of the fallen soldiers be read into the Congressional Record.

She refused to let anyone say their names.

I must be missing something.  Nancy Pelosi believes that the name of someone with ties to the illegal drug trade deserves to have her name mentioned repeatedly, but the names of thirteen soldiers who sacrificed their lives for their country can’t be mentioned even once.

The City of Minneapolis settled a wrongful death lawsuit with the family of George Floyd.  I find it hard to believe that the life of a felon who had been convicted eight times, and who had ingested a fatal dose of fentanyl, was worth anything.  His family received $27 million.

What will the families of the fallen soldiers get?  A folded American flag.  And a $100,000 “death gratuity” for dying while on active duty.

A military burial flag is a gift to the family of the deceased veteran on behalf of the Armed Forces and President of the United States. It’s a symbol of the honor earned, and sacrifice made, in battle while serving America.  A properly-folded flag is triangular in shape and has 13 folds, with the final folds wrapping the triangle in stars.

While no one wants one of those flags, they are treasured by the families who receive them, because of what the flag represents.

After the funeral of George Floyd, Nancy Pelosi presented a folded American flag to his family.  The flag supposedly flew over the Capitol building on the day of George’s death.  While, technically, there’s nothing saying that she couldn’t do that, tradition says that she shouldn’t.

A hundred thousand flags are flown over the Capitol each year.  Members of Congress are allowed to present them as gifts.  According to the House Members’ Congressional Handbook:

“Such flags must be for the personal use or display by the recipient (examples may include, but are not limited to: flags presented at a building dedication for which the Member secured official funding, a flag presented to the family of a fallen soldier, flags presented for exceptional public distinction, etc.).”

I understand giving a flag as a gift to commemorate the building of a highway, but I don’t understand how it can be used to honor the life of someone who’s only exceptional public distinction is that he was killed while resisting arrest.

It’s a sad state of affairs when criminals are hailed as heroes while heroes aren’t hailed at all.  Have we really reached a point where being killed while committing a crime is valued more than giving your life for your country?

It certainly seems so.

The family of a fallen soldier receives $100,000 and a folded American flag.  A star-spangled triangle.

The family of George Floyd, an eight-time convicted felon, received exactly the same thing.  Plus $26,900,000 more.
